Murder, She Wrote ran for 12 seasons
It ran for 12 seasons and turned Angela Lansbury into a global superstar, although Lansbury was actually the fourth choice to play Jessica Fletcher (both Jean Stapleton and Doris Day turned the part down before her). At it’s peak in American it regularly drew 40m viewers a show.
Lansbury was nominated for an Oscar in 1944 for her first ever film role in Gaslight aged 17. She has received an honorary Oscar, has won five Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, and an Olivier Award. She has also been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on three occasions.
In 1994 Lansbury was involved in an horrific incident involving a copper kettle and Whoopi Goldberg’s cat. In 2014, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
Now 93 years old Lansbury is still going strong, she will be appearing in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns starring Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins due out in December. Lansbury plays the Balloon Lady, as featured in the original Mary Poppins books by P.L. Travers.
